Mr Bongo began in 1989 as a small record shop under Daddy Kool’s Reggae Store on Berwick Street, London. They were the first to sell vinyl from independent hip hop labels like Def Jam and Rawkus outside the USA and became known for hard-to-find Latin music, especially Brazilian. Over the years, Mr Bongo moved within Soho, opened in Shibuya, Japan, and relocated their offices to Brighton in 1999, closing all shops by 2003. Now, they have a diverse recording roster featuring Brazilian, Latin, reggae, African, and jazz artists like Terry Callier, Jorge Ben, and Seu Jorge. In 2004, Mr Bongo expanded into world cinema, curating films by directors such as Scorsese and Coppola. Modest compared to competitors, Mr Bongo prides itself on its rich history and expertise. In 2011, they began producing and releasing feature films, starting with “Rio Breaks.” Mr Bongo also runs a publishing arm, licensing music for advertising, film, and TV. Clients include Bacardi, Nike, Adidas, and Guinness, and they handle worldwide royalty collection for artists and organizations.
