London based Portuguese singer-songwriter and producer Raquel Martins has been making an impact on the UK music scene with her unique blend of latin-infused alternative soul.
Raised under the sun in Portugal, before moving to the UK in 2017 on her own at the age of 17, her sound sits at the intersection of Brazilian music, alternative jazz and lo-fi indie, combined with electronic elements. Her unique genre-blending production takes you into the rich harmonic world of nylon guitar with her raspy and vulnerable voice allowing you to connect on a more visceral level.
Finding the sweet spot between organic and electronic, vulnerability and chaos, her music does not compromise and reflects her direct experience as an cultural immigrant as well as her interests on identity and human connection.
After working as a session and touring guitarist and musician for many established artists such as Amaarae, Biig Piig, Rina Sawayama, Mabel, Poppy Ajudha, to name a few, she released her debut EP “The Way” in 2021 which drew substancial support from tastemakers like Gilles Peterson, Jamie Cullum and Dan Digs (KRCW) and has been focusing on her solo project since then.
In 2023, she released her second EP ‘Empty Flower’, which made a splash across the industry with support from BBCR1 Alternative Selection and BBCR1 Future Soul, 6 Music, Jamie Cullum, Line Of Best Fit, Clash, WordPlay, whilst performing around the UK playing festivals like We Out Here, Lost Village, Wilderness and supporting the likes of the legendary Marcos Valle, Oscar Jerome, Mayra Andrade, Bala Desejo and more. She also consolidated her position in her native Portugal, playing at festivals like Nos Alive, Vodafone Paredes de Coura and with strong support from local national radio and press.
Raquel is currently finishing producing her debut album, a very vulnerable and intimate conceptual narrative journey through what home means and her search to comprehend and express that feeling. A statement to anyone that has experienced the rootless and groundless uneasiness that comes with that process.
